JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County - With hurricane season underway, the City of Jacksonville is trying to ensure that those that arrived after Florence left her path of destruction or who just want to be better prepared for the next big storm have some good advice to follow.

City officials say Tom Lonka, a Meteorologist with the Newport office of the National Weather Service, will present on the current hurricane season and reflect on Florence. They add that the discussion will involve avoiding the concept of category alone when considering the damage from a hurricane.

In addition, Representatives of City of Jacksonville Police as well as Fire & Emergency Services will discuss preparedness for new residents and experienced ones. City representatives will also talk about how to stay connected with information sources during a storm. Other representatives will be available to discuss hurricane preparedness for the community.

The event starts at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday and is expected to take about an hour; afterwards, residents can ask questions of the participants and other expert staff that will be present. It will be held in the Community Room at the City of Jacksonville Center for Public Safety at 200 Marine Boulevard.
